CMI made the largest green bond placement of Central America and the Caribbean

April 30 2021

Good news! It was recently made known that Corporación Multi Inversiones (CMI) made the largest green bond placemen in Central America and the Caribbean by a 100% renewable energy company.

We had a conversation with Enrique Crespo, CEO of CMI Capital, who gave us more details:

Corporación Multi Inversiones placed the largest green bond for 700 million dollars

CMI Energy is a renewable energy company whose main headquarters are in Guatemala and has presence in Central America and the Caribbean. Thanks to this —and as part of the multi-Latin family corporation CMI—, they have made a successful placement, with which they seek to generate impact investments to promote sustainable development.

According to Enrique Crespo —CEO of CMI Capital—, for 100 years they have managed businesses of different kinds, among which a platform of renewable energy generation assets has been developed —both in Guatemala and in other countries in the region— that has grown over the last 25 years.

Likewise, he mentioned that they recently placed this green bond issue that amounts to 700 million dollars in international markets.

The strategic objective for the issue is to refinance the entire renewable energy asset platform to obtain better financial cost conditions, more flexibility in the use of resources, as well as operational flexibility to accelerate the operational efficiency process.

Given this, he stated that: «It is the largest green bond issue in history by a renewable energy company in Central America and the Caribbean, so we are very proud and grateful because international markets and investors around the world have trusted us».

What are green bonds?

Crespo commented that this makes it possible to enter capital markets with the largest and most diversified 100% renewable energy portfolio in the aforementioned regions, as this will allow the creation of more renewable energy plants to continue promoting the change in the matrix and gaining energy independence for our countries. It also leads to the creation of sources of work and to optimizing the cost of energy.

This placement made by CMI Energy contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, as well as to the decarbonization and diversification of the regional energy network in Central America and the Caribbean.

Show of trust

Enrique Crespo said that this achievement is not only important for CMI, but it is also a sign of confidence from the international community and investors from around the world towards Guatemala and the region.

Likewise, he added that green bonds are a special category of securities issuance in these markets and that they are classified in this way when assets generate clean energy. He mentioned that in our country we have many natural and renewable resources such as water, wind and sun, where energy can be created through generation plants.

In addition, he indicated that the business management of this renewable energy is aligned with the fulfillment of at least 4 or 5 of the most important United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Therefore, he believes that the future of Guatemala and the world has to do with the responsible and sustainable use of natural resources.

¿What message would you give to young business persons who seek to accomplish a trajectory like CMI’s?

«This marks a before and after in the history of the corporation … from my professional perspective I would tell you that this is a fundamental achievement but that it is possible for other people, other professionals and executive talents to achieve it. My advice is: you must dream big; you must be aware that in Guatemala and Central America we have what it takes to compete globally. The realization of our dreams involves hard work but it requires teamwork, appreciating and recognizing the talent that has made this great milestone possible … Believe in Guatemala, believe in Central America and believe that our country and region are there to compete and be one of the best in the world”.

Without a doubt, our country has a very important wealth that we must take care of through sustainable initiatives, just as CMI has done.
